Why Practicing Self-Care Is Important

Self-care is a general term that describes everything you do deliberately for your mental, physical, and emotional well-being. As simple as it sounds, many of us pay little attention to self-care. This is why ‘deliberately’ is one of the most important words in the definition. You need to be conscious of your well-being before you can achieve true self-care. It starts from the simple acts like not checking emails at night when you know it affects your sleep and extends to more important decisions like going for a vacation or booking a massage when you feel you need one.

Self-care encourages you to maintain a healthy relationship with yourself so that you can transmit the good feelings to others. You cannot give to others what you don’t have yourself. While some may misconstrue self-care as selfish, it’s far from that. When you pay adequate attention to your well-being, you’re not considering your needs alone. You’re reinvigorating yourself so that you can be the best version of yourself for the people around you. Everyone around you also benefits from the renewed energy and joy you exhibit.

Benefits Of Self Care

  • Positivity:-

Practising self-care produces positives feeling, which helps Positivity and self-esteem. Most of the activities you are likely to add to your list of self-care practices will make you feel good. Whether you choose to dance for five minutes or meditate for 10 minutes a day, you’ll feel good. The more you do this, the more you’re likely to recognise that you deserve to feel good. Which, in turn, means that your confidence will increase.

  • Increased self-knowledge:- 

Practicing self-care requires thinking about what you really love to do. The exercise of figuring out what makes you feel passionate and inspired can help you understand yourself a lot better. Sometimes, this can even spark a change in career or a reprioritization of previously abandoned hobbies.

  • Productivity and motivation:-

Focusing on self-care can improve productivity and motivation. It could be that you spend your time looking forward to the fifteen minutes you get at the end of the day to unwind. So, you’re motivated to work hard to get there quicker.  In general, the fact that you’re taking time out will leave you feeling refreshed and energised. So, you’ll have more energy to get the other important stuff done.

  • Healthy relationships with ourselves:-

Taking time out each day for self-care helps to develop healthy relationships with ourselves. It is an absolute fact that you are the most important person in your life. Ya, we are all devoted to certain other people in our lives. But, without a good relationship with ourselves, our relationships with friends and family will suffer. Taking time to stop and do something we love, gives us the opportunity to check in with ourselves. How do we feel? How do we want to feel? Are we doing what we love?

  • Higher engagement levels:-

If we do self-care activities, we are likely to have higher engagement levels. Which means we’ll feel more connected to the world around us. The relaxation you get from your self-care will give you more awareness of what is going on around you. These days we spend a lot of time keeping busy (or feeling busy) that we don’t have the space to take the world in. Taking 5-30 minutes will open your eyes and mind.

Six Types of Self-Care

1.Emotional Self-Care:-

It’s important to have healthy coping skills to deal with uncomfortable emotions, like anger, anxiety, and sadness. Emotional self-care may include activities that help you acknowledge and express your feelings on a regular basis. Whether you talk to a partner or close friend about how you feel, or you set aside time for leisure activities that help you process your emotions, it’s important to incorporate emotional self-care into your life.

Examples: Seeing a therapist, writing in a journal, creating art, playing music etc.

2.Practical Self-Care:-

Tasks you complete that fulfill core aspects of your life in order to prevent future stressful situations.

Examples: Creating a budget, taking professional development classes, organizing your closet, etc.

3.Physical Self-Care:-

Basically involves getting active, eating well and taking care of your physical health. It’s moving your body by participating in physical activities that you enjoy. It’s listening to your body’s hunger and fullness cues. It’s going to the doctor for a check-up or when you think you might be sick.

Examples: Taking a walk during lunch breaks, sleeping eight hours a day, staying hydrated, etc.

4.Mental Self-Care:-

Mental self-care includes doing things that keep your mind sharp, like puzzles, or learning about a subject that fascinates you. You might find reading books or watching movies that inspire you fuels your mind. Mental self-care also involves doing things that help you stay mentally healthy.

Examples: Reading a book, solving a puzzle, playing chess, going to a museum, etc.

5.Social Self-Care:-

Socialization is key to self-care. But, often, it’s hard to make time for friends and it’s easy to neglect your relationships when life gets busy. Close connections are important to your well-being. The best way to cultivate and maintain close relationships is to put time and energy into building your relationships with others.

Examples: Brunch with friends, going on a date, making time to call your mom regularly, etc.

6.Spiritual Self Care:-

Activities that nurtures your spirit and allows you to think bigger than yourself. Spiritual self care does not have to be religious, although for some it is.

Examples: Meditation, yoga, going to a place of worship, be in nature, dedicate time for self-reflection, etc.
